Turn on 2-step verification for your GoDaddy account

Short answer

Where the setting is

On GoDaddy, the setting is at sso.godaddy.com: Security, then Add verification method, then Authenticator app.

GoDaddy asks for an Authenticator name and a 6-digit code to finish. This guide is about the authenticator app.

These steps are from our own test. We didn’t write them from a GoDaddy help page, so this guide links none.

Steps

Steps

  1. Sign in to your GoDaddy account at sso.godaddy.com.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Choose Add verification method, then choose Authenticator app.
  4. GoDaddy shows a QR code. Scan it with MELKEM Authenticator on your iPhone.
  5. Fill in the two boxes GoDaddy shows: Authenticator name, and 6-digit code, which is the code MELKEM Authenticator now shows for GoDaddy.

In MELKEM Authenticator, the new entry shows your GoDaddy customer number followed by “@ GoDaddy”. That is normal. Don’t share it with anyone.

Staying safe

Sign out on shared computers

GoDaddy lets you remove the authenticator without entering a code, so always sign out on shared or borrowed computers.

Keep it safe

Keep the setup and the codes to yourself

Never share a code with anyone, even someone who says they work for GoDaddy. See why you should never share your code.

The QR code, and any setup key shown beside it, is the secret behind every code your app will make. Never screenshot, print or save a page that shows them.

After you add GoDaddy to your authenticator app, make a new encrypted export and keep it somewhere safe. An export made before you added GoDaddy doesn’t have it.

If it goes wrong

Add a second way in

Add a passkey as a second method where GoDaddy offers one. See how a passkey differs from an authenticator code. Keep a code by text message for a last resort. See why a code in an app beats a code by text message.

Write any backup codes on paper and keep the paper somewhere safe. Don’t photograph them or save them on your phone or computer. If you ever lose the phone, see our guide on what to do if you lose your phone.

Where these steps come from

These steps come from our own test on . They are not copied from a GoDaddy help page, and GoDaddy can change its screens at any time. If what you see differs, go by what GoDaddy shows you.

Tested means we set up MELKEM Authenticator on that service and it worked. It doesn’t mean the service endorses MELKEM.

We used MELKEM Authenticator, one example of an authenticator app, to test these steps.
