II Common questions

My iPhone was lost or replaced. Can I get my codes back?

If this iPhone is lost, erased or replaced, your codes are gone. An encrypted export, kept somewhere safe, is the only way to get them back.

On the new iPhone, open Settings › Import from an export and choose the file.

How do I move my codes to a new phone?

Your codes are stored only on this iPhone. They aren't in iCloud and can't be restored to a different phone.

On the old iPhone, open Settings › Create encrypted export and save the file somewhere you can reach from the new one. On the new iPhone, open Settings › Import from an export, choose the file and enter the same passphrase.

What happens if I turn off my iPhone's passcode?

Turning off this iPhone's passcode erases your codes. A passcode is required to use this app.

When the passcode is back on, the app names the accounts whose codes were erased. An encrypted export, kept somewhere safe, is the only way to get them back. Restore them with Settings › Import from an export.

I forgot my export passphrase. Can it be recovered?

This passphrase can't be recovered. Without it the export file is useless: nobody, including MELKEM, can open it.

Create a new export with a new passphrase while your codes are still on this iPhone, and write the passphrase down.

Why is there no cloud backup?

Your codes are stored only on this iPhone. They aren't in iCloud and can't be restored to a different phone.

That's deliberate: the app makes no network connections, so there's no copy of your codes anywhere else for anyone to reach. The encrypted export is the backup, and you decide where it's kept.

If I save my encrypted export to iCloud Drive, is it in iCloud?

Yes, the file itself is stored in iCloud Drive if that's where you save it. It stays encrypted with the passphrase you chose, so it can't be opened without that passphrase. Your setup keys inside the app are kept in the iPhone's keychain on this device only and aren't synced to iCloud.

III How it works

For how the app makes codes, stores setup keys, encrypts exports, locks and uses the network, read How MELKEM Authenticator works.
