How to turn on two-factor authentication for LinkedIn

Short answer

Where the setting is

On LinkedIn, the setting is under your profile icon: Settings & Privacy, then Sign in & security, then Two-factor authentication.

LinkedIn offers two methods, a text message (SMS) or an authenticator app. Its help page says: “LinkedIn recommends the authenticator app as the preferred two-factor authentication method.”

Steps

Steps

  1. Install an authenticator app.
  2. Click the profile icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage and select Settings & Privacy.
  3. Under the Sign in & security, click Two-factor authentication to enable or change the two-factor authentication method.
  4. Click Set up to enable two-factor authentication and select Authenticator App as the method. You may be asked to enter your password for security reasons. You may also be asked to enter an authentication code sent to your email address or to approve the change through your LinkedIn app.
  5. Enter the secret key provided by LinkedIn into the authenticator app.
  6. Enter the 6-digit authentication code generated by your authenticator app to verify your device.

LinkedIn adds: “Now your device is ready for two-factor authentication. Whenever you log in from a new device, open your Authenticator app and enter the code when prompted.”

Backup

Save your backup codes

LinkedIn’s help pages do not mention backup codes. If you are ever shown any, save them somewhere apart from your phone. LinkedIn has a separate help article called “No access to mobile device for two-factor authentication”, which this guide does not cover. If you ever lose the phone, see our guide on what to do if you lose your phone.

Tested means we set up MELKEM Authenticator on that service and it worked. It doesn’t mean the service endorses MELKEM.

We used MELKEM Authenticator, one example of an authenticator app, to test these steps.
